Hüttschlag Salzburger Land
National park municipality and official mountaineering village
The former mining community of Hüttschlag is around 8km from Grossarl. The municipality was incorporated into the Hohe Tauern National Park in 1991, and in 2008 it became one of Austria’s designated ‘mountaineering villages’ – a title which is awarded by the Austrian Alpine Association in accordance with strict criteria and in line with the objectives of the International Alpine Convention. Mountaineering villages are acknowledged trailblazers of climbing and hillwalking in their respective regions.
Hüttschlag is an ideal destination for a wide range of activities, especially in winter when it attracts large numbers of cross-country skiers, winter hikers and ski tourers. Downhill skiers are also well looked after in Hüttschlag: the ski bus provides an excellent service between the village and the Grossarl-Dorfgastein ski resort.
