hiking on a summer holiday in Großarl

Hiking holidays in Großarl

The valley of meadows

The Großarltal Valley is a haven for walkers and hikers with a network of well-signposted trails leading through flower-filled meadows and past rushing streams. Our valley is known as the Valley of Huts thanks to the huge number of traditional wooden refuges in the mountains above Großarl. Make sure you plan a little extra time to stop off and sample some of the local food.

Hiking in the Hohe Tauern national park

Breathtaking scenery

The Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest national park in the Alps and home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals. Chamoix, golden eagles and marmots are just some of the alpine animals you can expect to meet, while fans of flora should keep their eyes open for classics such as woolgrass and the famous edelweiss.

The luxury of simplicity

The GROSSARLER HOF has its own hut: the Mooslehenalm. Accessible on foot and by bike, it is proof that luxury can often be found in the simplest of things. Far from the whirlpools and waterbeds of our Erlenreich Relax Spa, we invite visitors up here to enjoy the majesty of nature in its purest form.

Hiking recommendations
Our Mooslehenalm is just one of 40 huts in the Großarltal Valley. Below you will find one of our favourite hikes in the region leading up to the Weißalm hut.

Hike to the Weißalm hut

Leaving from the Grund car park in the Ellmautal Valley, climb up through the forest until you reach a clearing. From there, head across the open meadows until you get to the Weißalm (total walking time around 1 hour). This centuries-old hut is used to this day as a dairy to produce the "Sauerkäse" cheese for which the valley is famous. The walls are covered with farming tools dating back decades and in some cases centuries. From the Weißalm you can either return the way you came back to the car park or continue on to the Ellmaualm hut or the Loosbühelalm hut.

Summer activity programme

Yoga hikes are the perfect way to bring balance to mind, body and soul, while budding mountaineers can scale some of the highest peaks in the valley with a qualified guide. These are just two of the many activities on offer in summer as part of an activity programme run by BERG-GESUND, a local mountain sports association. Access to all activities is free of charge for guests staying with us at the GROSSARLER HOF.
