Grossarl in bloom – a walker’s paradise

Alpine roses, alpenroses, snow-roses or rhododendrons

Call them Alpine roses, alpenroses, snow-roses or rhododendrons, these pink and red flowers set the pastures and meadows of Grossarl alight with their vivid colour when they come into bloom in mid-June. This is a wonderful time for donning walking boots and heading to the Alpine peaks and meadows for a good hike.

The period between mid-June and mid-July is very special in the Alps, and particularly so in the Valley of Alpine Meadows. The cows are eager to return to the lush mountain meadows where flavoursome herbs impart milk and dairy products with their exceptional taste. The huts open their doors again and serve rustic food and drinks on their terraces where guests enjoy the views and the riot of colour.

This is also the time of the midsummer bonfires with which we welcome summer in the Grossarl Valley. This year, the mountains of Grossarl will literally be on fire on Saturday, 17 June when thousands of bonfires light up the skies.
