Hüttschlag

National park municipality and official Mountaineering Village

The former mining community of Hüttschlag is around 8km away from Grossarl. The municipality was incorporated into the Hohe Tauern National Park in 1991, and in 2008 it became one of Austria's designated 'mountaineering villages' – a title which is awarded by the Austrian Alpine Association in accordance with strict criteria and in line with the objectives of the International Alpine Convention. Mountaineering Villages are considered trailblazers of mountaineering in their respective regions.

Hüttschlag is an ideal destination for a wide range of activities, especially in winter, and so attracts many cross-country skiiers, winter hikers and ski tourers. Downhill skiers are also well catered for in Hüttschlag: the ski bus provides an excellent service between the village and the Grossarl-Dorfgastein ski resort.
